Beyond Face presents an evening showcasing exciting new early-stage work from global majority artists based in the South West.
We are Here to Share is Beyond Face’s scratch night programme. It’s a vital platform for global majority artists to share their early-stage work and an opportunity for audiences to be the first to experience pieces of live performance and offer valuable feedback.
Giving four artists a platform to test their ideas, each piece will differ in tone and perspective, but all represent the inspiring talent found within the region.
This event will see performances from artists based in the region as well as extracts from members of our Exeter-based Storytell group.
So, join us in celebrating the brilliant new performance work being made in the South West!
About the Work
Cristina Gómez Penna presents: Lucy/Lucia
Lucy / Lucia follows two women who cross paths in a cold train station: Sally, who savours every silent moment of her journey between home and work, and Lucia, a newcomer eager to share her experiences. Despite the barriers of language and culture, they begin to recognise themselves in one another, and find a way to keep each other company.
Lucy / Lucia is about care between women as a way of holding each other emotionally: about the value of building bonds and looking at one another with empathy. It is about recognising ourselves in someone different, even without a shared language, and breaking through the barriers of fear and control that keep us apart.
Through simplicity, this scratch highlights moments that invite reflection: seeing yourself through another person, and the importance of connecting through shared moments.
Rene Katiisa presents: Sugarcane and Concrete
Sugarcane & Concrete is an autobiographical solo theatre piece blending storytelling, humour, music and audience participation. Following my journey from childhood in Kampala, Uganda, to growing up in South London and motherhood in Bristol, the piece explores identity, migration, belonging and the many versions of ourselves we create in order to feel accepted. At its heart, it is a story about choosing yourself and making space for Black joy.
Ivanhoe Norona presents: That’s Not Cool Mate
“That’s Not Cool Mate” is about the difficult journey Carlo or Charlie De Sousa has to make with his best friend Caine Gonzalez. Charlie has moved to Exeter after a successful
career in the City of London. He has been living in Exeter for 4 years and has made it his home. He is a divorcee and lives very much on his own. However he is regularly visited by his childhood and long term friend Caine Gonzalez. However Caine is a misogynist who
Is very intimidating with women.
Safi Darden presents: 12 Pages
In this piece in development we follow part of a journey to uncover and understand the content of 12 pages of writing as the only ones salvaged from a book in draft by an ancestor now passed. It is a multimedia journey in snippets of time, conversation and imagination, mainly in spoken word.
