The Bookery is delighted to welcome two inspiring voices in nature writing, Chris SperringandIan Parsons, for a special evening of conversation celebrating the wildlife and landscapes of Britain. This unique joint event brings together two authors whose work invites us to look more closely at the natural world around usand to better understand our place within it.
Chris Sperring, widely regarded as one of the UKs leading authorities on owls, will discuss his fascinating new book Ghosts of the Night . Drawing on decades of experience as a conservation officer and field expert, Sperring opens a window onto the hidden lives of these extraordinary birds. From the silent, ghost-like glide of the barn owl to the familiar call of the tawny at dusk, his writing combines scientific insight with a deep sense of wonder, exploring why owls have long held such a powerful place in our imagination.
Ian Parsonswill join Chris to discuss his beautifully reflective Tarka Revisited marking 100 years since Tarka the Otter first captured the public imagination. In this richly observed and thought-provoking book, Parsons traces the journey of the otter in Britainfrom decline and near extinction to a remarkable recoverywhile also examining the health of our rivers and the wider environment. Blending personal experience with natural history and conservation insight, it is both a celebration and a timely call to attention.
Together, Sperring and Parsons will explore their shared passion for wildlife, offering an evening of storytelling, insight and conversation that will appeal to readers, nature lovers and anyone curious about the world just beyond our doorsteps.
Both authors will be available to meet guests and sign copies of their books following the event
