Empire Strikes Back - Why Imperialism Matters

About

Black History Month: Empire Strikes Back

Marking Black History Month, Empire Strikes Back is a live event, looking at unsavory aspects of Britain’s past and the effect on the way we think. Drs Gajendra Singh and Gareth Curless from the History Department will argue that some people are comforted by the nostalgia of imperial notions. A recent YouGov poll found that nearly half of Brits are proud of their colonial past, while 43% think the British Empire was a “good thing”.

Britain’s post-Brexit future was described in civil service documents as ‘Empire 2.0’, which was met with ridicule by some journalists in Africa and India. Covid safety measures are in place and ticket holders should wear a mask.
