Free Summer Activities for Families

We know the school holidays can be an expensive time, so we've put together our top ideas for things to do in Exeter this summer, completely free! 

Whether the sun is shining or the rain makes an appearance, you'll find lots of family-friendly things to do across the city. From parks and trails to museums, events and outdoor entertainment, discover our favourite free ways to enjoy summer in Exeter.

Step back in time

1. Discover thousands of years of history at Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM). With free entry, fascinating galleries and a packed programme of family workshops, trails, and drop-in activities throughout the summer holidays, it's the perfect rainy-day (or air conditioned sunny day!) adventure.

2. See the city through the eyes of Exeter's famous Red Coat Guided Tours. These free, award-winning walking tours bring Exeter's incredible history to life, with stories of Romans, rebels, and royalty. Tours run daily and last around 90 minutes.

3. Prefer to wander at your own pace? Pick up one of Exeter's self-guided heritage trails and uncover hidden corners of the city. Families can enjoy fun quizzes, puzzles, and challenges along the way, making sightseeing an adventure for all ages. Choose from Medieval, City Wall, and Woolen trails around the city.

4. Drop into the Custom House Visitor Centre to uncover over 2,000 years of Exeter's rich trading history. Explore interactive displays, fascinating artefacts, and a short film before heading out to enjoy the bustling Quayside. New for this summer, join a free guided tour every Sunday afternoon. Just drop in between 2pm and 4pm and let new volunteer, Ian, guide you around.

Jazz on the Quay

5. Soak up the sounds of summer at Jazz on the Quay. Enjoy free live jazz by the water, sunshine, and a relaxed atmosphere the whole family will love. Pack a picnic, find a spot by the riverside, and let the music set the soundtrack to your summer.

UNESCO City of Literature

6. Did you know Exeter is a UNESCO City of Literature? Recognised for its 1,000-year unbroken history of making books and popularising reading since the early 13th century, enjoy a city where words, creativity and culture are celebrated around every corner. Explore literary trails, uncover stories behind the city’s writers and landmarks, and join one of several Silent Book Club events each month.

Make a splash!

7. When the temperature rises, cool off at Heavitree Park's paddling pools or race through the fountains at St Thomas Splash Pad. With tipping buckets, water jets, and plenty of space to play, they're guaranteed favourites for little ones.

Take a trip

8. Just a short journey from Exeter, the charming town of Topsham is perfect for a family day out. Browse independent shops, stroll along the waterfront, spot wildlife on the estuary and enjoy one of Devon's prettiest riverside locations.

9. Why not combine city, coast and countryside? Exeter is perfectly placed for adventures across Devon, making it easy to explore the beaches, Dartmoor, picturesque villages, and stunning landscapes, all within easy reach. One of the best things about Exeter is how close it is to the coast. In around 20 minutes you can be building sandcastles on the beaches of Exmouth or Dawlish, whether you travel by car or enjoy one of Devon's most scenic rail journeys along the coast.

Lights, camera… action!

10. Young film fans can explore the fascinating Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, packed with interactive exhibits celebrating the magic of cinema. The beautiful University of Exeter gardens are also a tranquil place to explore, offering plenty of shade. This summer Museum Mondays take place through August, with free kids' creative activities inspired by all things film and moving image.

Football fever

11. Discover St James Park, the historic home of Exeter City FC, known as the Grecians. Founded in 1901, the club has a fascinating story, including being the first team to play Brazil’s national side in 1914. Explore the stadium with a free tour, visit the Exeter City FC Museum and experience a true piece of Devon football heritage.

Outdoor green spaces

12. Escape to Haldon Forest Park, just minutes from Exeter, where families can enjoy miles of free woodland walks, cycling trails, wildlife spotting, and picnic areas. It's the perfect place for a fun-filled summer day surrounded by nature.

13. Discover the Exeter Green Circle, a 12-mile walking route linking parks, woodlands, rivers and historic landmarks. Tackle the full trail or explore it in shorter sections, making it an easy, free way to experience Exeter's beautiful green spaces and stunning views this summer.

14. Offering free spaces to relax, explore and unwind, enjoy Exeter’s beautiful parks and gardens this summer. From riverside walks and wildlife spotting to family picnics and play areas, discover green escapes throughout the city.

Retail therapy

15. Head to Princesshay this summer for Princess Play, a free family playground featuring mini golf, giant chess, table tennis, climbing equipment and more. Relax in the outdoor space, enjoy live music, street food, sweet treats and the Independent Market.

16. Get ready for Guildhall Live (29th - 31st August), a spectacular FREE three-day music festival celebrating 50 years of unforgettable music at Guildhall Shopping Exeter. Enjoy tribute acts, local talent and six live performances daily, taking you on a journey through the biggest hits from the 1970s to today.

17. Discover unique treasures at Fore Street Flea this summer (19th July and 13th September), where vintage lovers, bargain hunters and curious visitors can browse a brilliant mix of antiques, collectables, handmade crafts, retro finds, and independent stalls. Soak up the friendly atmosphere, meet local makers and experience one of the city’s most creative shopping events.

18. Experience First Thursdays on Gandy Street (6th August and 3rd September), a brand-new monthly celebration of Exeter’s independent spirit. Enjoy a lively evening atmosphere with entertainment, shopping, food, and local businesses coming together to showcase the creativity, character, and community of this vibrant city quarter.

Country life

19. Enjoy a summer visit to Greendale, just outside Exeter. Explore the farm shop filled with local produce, browse independent businesses, relax over food and drink, and soak up the countryside atmosphere. Families can follow the self-guided Farm Trail, meeting the animals along the way for a fun and free adventure for all ages.

20. Head to Darts Farm this summer for a taste of Devon countryside life. Wander the farm, say hello to the animals, explore the nature trails and discover local food, crafts, and independent producers. With plenty of space to explore and enjoy, it’s a brilliant free day out just a short drive from Exeter.

Meet hundreds of rescued donkeys

21. A short trip from Exeter, the Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth offers free entry and the chance to meet hundreds of friendly donkeys. There's also an indoor visitor centre, gardens, walking trails, and plenty of family activities to enjoy.
