Exeter has a rich cultural heritage. Its long history has led to a strong identity as a small city with lots of character. Exeter’s location in the heart of Devon is hard to forget, with glimpses of the surrounding green countryside from many parts of the city. Devonians are known for loving the outdoors, and Exeter offers plenty of opportunity to get out and enjoy a wide range of activities, from walking and cycling along the River Exe Estuary, to canoeing and kayaking along England’s oldest ship canal.

Being surrounded by fertile farmland and proximity to miles of coastline means the city’s restaurants place a strong emphasis on local produce, and the weekly farmers market gives buyers the chance to buy direct from the producers. The annual Exeter Festival of South West Food & Drink and other foodie events throughout the year celebrate the excellent quality of food and drink in Exeter.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Did you know one of the UK’s top professional orchestras is based here in the South West? Considered to be ‘the cultural heartbeat of the South West’, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform over 140 full symphonic concerts each year across their home territory of 10,000 square miles. The BSO are returning to the University of Exeter’s Great Hall for a total of nine symphonic concerts this season! These evenings see them joined by a rotating cast of world-renowned soloists and conductors performing an extensive repertoire – you will really be surprised by how many of these classical pieces you recognise!

A vibrant calendar of year round festivals make Exeter a cultural hub for the south west. This year's line-up is a real crowd pleaser, with an array of festivals set to welcome and entertain visitors of all ages.
