West Exe Trail

About

The West Exe Trail is an historic walk celebrating Tiverton’s lace making and architectural heritage. Walkers can discover how entrepreneur John Heathcoat’s arrival in Tiverton with his patented lace-machine inventions, and the Heathcoat family’s care for their workers, transformed this area from woollen cloth slump to lace-based prosperity.

The Trail was conceived by the Tiverton Civic Society to raise awareness of the town’s historic and architectural heritage, and links to an earlier Trail designed by the Society covering the town centre on the eastern side of the river Exe and highlighting the development of the woollen trade and manufacture in the town.
