Treasure: The Role of the Portable Antiquities Scheme in conserving Devon's heritage

About

Dickon Perryman, Finds Liaison Officer for Devon and Cornwall What qualifies as a find? And who decides whether it is treasure? Dickon Perryman explains the Treasure Act 1996 and the lengthy process of researching, identifying and recording treasure. In a talk with particular relevance to Devon, he illustrates what kind of artifacts are found here and the importance of the Portable Antiquities Scheme for museums in the county. RAMM’s Anglo-Saxon ring and the Seaton Hoard are recent examples. A PhD candidate at the University of Exeter with a background in numismatics, Dickon’s thesis is on the Late Anglo-Saxon and Early Norman mints in Devon. He was a speaker at Friends of RAMM’s event ‘A Ring and It’s World: Anglo-Saxon Exeter and Devon’ in March 2025. Information about accessibility is available on our Access page.
