The Castle Quarter is named after the 11th century Exeter Castle, now a popular events venue in the heart of the city. The Grade II listed Northernhay Gardens and neighbouring Rougemont Gardens originally formed part of the defences to Exeter Castle, and today offer a tranquil space to relax in the city centre.
Close to the gardens, you'll find the cobbled, traffic-free Gandy Street, home to a range of independent retailers, cafes and restaurants, such as MakerMart, which showcases the very best designer makers from Devon and beyond, supporting local products and craft; and Chococo, where you can try and buy award-winning fine chocolates! In the evening there is a great choice of gin and cocktail bars, including the Mermaid, Crocketts Gin Bar and the Cocktail Club!
There is lots to do in the Castle Quarter. It's home to the Exeter Phoenix, a vibrant, multi-artform venue hosting a packed calendar of live music, theatre, contemporary art, DJ events, dance, comedy, talks, creative courses, classes and workshops, family events, and film in the solar-powered cinema! Next door is the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, where you can explore 16 galleries of fascinating exhibitions, completely free of charge!
Also not to be missed is a visit to Exeter Library, Devon's largest library which hosts an exciting and varied programme of events and activities that celebrate the local community.
